Your power wheelchair is your passport to regaining your mobility. It’s also a significant investment so it is critical to properly care for your investment. Proper maintenance could lead to up to 10 years with daily use. There are a few basic things to remember after you invest in a power wheelchair. It is important to read and fully understand your owner’s manual and always know where it is. Almost all power wheelchairs have a pocket on the back so we recommended you keep it there. We also recommend you write down your power wheelchair's serial number and any phone numbers you may need on your owner’s manual. Save phone number such as the company you bought it from and the technical service hotline at the manufacturer.
We suggest that you get familiar with your power wheelchairs standard operating noises. By doing this you will be likely to notice if issues arise and hopefully you can get the unit repaired quickly to prevent further issues. As a general rule of thumb if any part of your chair is worn, cracked, broken, you should replace it. Please do not risk your safety or overall mobility by putting off maintenance and repairs. Most replacement parts are available for most power wheelchairs on the market. If you have an older power wheelchair some parts may be harder to find. Always keep your power chair dry. This sounds like it should be common sense, but damp or wet conditions can seriously damage your power wheelchair. This is especially true for its electrical parts.
Always:
-
Store your power wheelchair in a dry place.
-
Wipe up any moisture or spills quickly.
-
Make sure your power wheelchair’s protective plastic shrouds are secure.
-
If you power wheelchair becomes extremely wet we suggest suspending use immediately. Proceed to dry it off completely and call a service professional.
It is important to keep your power wheelchair tires in good shape just you would on your car. Tires play a critical role in a power wheelchair’s overall performance. If you have pneumatic (air-filled) tires be sure to check the tire pressure often. It doesn't hurt to keep a spare tire and inner tube if a blowout occurs. Often times your usual power wheelchair will have solid tires. You should inspect the tread level regularly and replace them when needed.
We cannot stress this enough, please maintain your batteries. If you are using your power wheelchair daily it is important to charge them every night. If you charge the batteries over night always remember to unplug the charger each morning. Modern power wheelchairs have smart chargers that will shut off automatically once they are fully charged. This means there is no need to babysit your charger. If you decide to charge your power wheelchair each night your power wheelchair will always be ready for that days adventure. Don’t expose your batteries to extreme cold or heat. This means bring your batteries inside during the cold winter months and hot summer months. Extremes temperatures are extremely harmful toy our batteries.
